Permanent vs Agency Nursing: What Career Path Fits Your Current Era?

Whether you're in your Taylor Swift Era, your Fleetwood Mac Landslide season, or somewhere in between, one thing is certain: life changes.
Careers change, priorities change, and the nursing role that suited you five or ten years ago may not be the role that best supports your life today.
As Taylor Swift would say, we're all in different eras. And for the Fleetwood Mac fans among us, perhaps you're reflecting on the lyrics of Landslide and recognising just how quickly life can shift and evolve.
The same can be said for nursing careers!
One of the biggest misconceptions in healthcare is that you have to choose between permanent and agency nursing and stick with that decision forever. The reality is that the best career path often depends on your current season of life.
What worked for you as a new graduate eager to explore may not work when you're juggling school drop-offs and family commitments. And what suits you now may look completely different once the kids have flown the coop and you're ready for a new adventure.
So rather than asking, "Which is better?" perhaps the better question is: What nursing career fits your current era—or season—of life?

The Adventure Era
You might be in this era if you're early in your career, don't have significant family commitments, or simply have a sense of adventure and a desire to see more of Australia. This is often the stage where agency nursing really shines.
Contract work can provide opportunities to travel, explore new communities, work in different healthcare settings and build your confidence as a clinician. Every contract brings new experiences, new colleagues and new skills.
Many nurses tell us that some of their most memorable professional experiences came from saying "yes" to a contract they were initially unsure about.
If you're looking to broaden your horizons, challenge yourself and gain diverse clinical experience, agency nursing may be the perfect fit for this chapter.
The Family Era
Life can become a little more complicated when school lunches, sports carnivals, ageing parents, childcare arrangements and family commitments enter the picture. During this stage, priorities often shift from adventure to flexibility and stability.
For some nurses, a permanent position offers the predictability they need. Knowing your roster, working close to home and having a consistent routine can make family life easier to manage.
For others, agency nursing can actually provide greater flexibility, allowing them to choose shifts and contracts that work around family commitments.
And here's something we see more often than people realise: some families embrace agency nursing as a lifestyle. A short-term contract in a regional town. A few months by the coast. A school holiday adventure. Time spent exploring a new part of Australia together.
For some nurses and midwives, agency work provides opportunities to create experiences and memories that simply aren't possible with a traditional permanent role. Partners may be able to work remotely, children can experience different communities, and families can enjoy a level of flexibility and travel that suits their lifestyle and goals.
The Family Era doesn't have to mean putting adventure on hold. Sometimes it simply means redefining what adventure looks like. Ask yourself:
Do I need consistent hours and routine?
How important is roster flexibility?
Do I need to remain close to family support networks?
Could agency work actually create more freedom for my family?
Am I willing or able to travel for work at this stage?
There is no right or wrong answer—only what works best for you and your family.
The Career Growth Era
Perhaps your focus isn't flexibility or travel. Perhaps you're in your "What's next for my career?" era, you may be looking to:
Develop specialist skills
Gain experience in different clinical settings
Step into leadership roles
Increase your earning potential
Expand your professional network
Agency nursing can expose you to a wide range of healthcare environments, helping you build adaptability and clinical confidence. Permanent roles may offer structured development pathways, leadership opportunities and long-term career progression within an organisation.
Both pathways can support professional growth. The key is identifying what type of growth you're looking for.
The Freedom Era
This is often one of the most exciting stages of a nursing career. The children have grown up.
Family commitments have eased. You have years of experience behind you and more freedom to choose how you spend your time and for many nurses and midwives, this is when agency nursing becomes incredibly appealing.
We regularly speak with clinicians who decide it's finally their turn to explore regional and remote Australia, work in communities they've always wanted to visit, or simply enjoy the flexibility of choosing when and where they work.
One comment we hear often is: "I wish I'd done this sooner."
Whether it's a short rural contract, a coastal placement or a few months exploring a new region, agency work can offer a sense of adventure at a stage when you're finally free to embrace it.
The Stability Era
Sometimes what we need most is certainty. You may have personal circumstances that mean staying close to home is important. Perhaps you need access to:
Specialist medical services
Family support
Children's schools
Community commitments
A partner's employment
Established social networks
In these situations, a permanent role may provide the consistency and security you're looking for. And that's perfectly okay, career success isn't measured by how many contracts you've completed or how far you've travelled. It's about finding work that supports your life as it is right now.
The Best Part? You Can Change Eras
One of the greatest things about nursing is that your career can evolve alongside your life! You don't have to commit to one path forever.
Many nurses move between permanent and agency work multiple times throughout their careers as their priorities, circumstances and goals change. The role that suits you today may not suit you in five years' time, and that's normal! Your career should support the life you want to live—not the other way around.
Whether you're in your Adventure Era, Family Era, Career Growth Era, Freedom Era or Stability Era, there are opportunities available that can help you achieve your personal and professional goals.
At Kenmore Health Recruitment, we understand that every nurse and midwife is on a different journey. That's why we take the time to understand what's important to you and help connect you with opportunities that fit your current season of life. Because nursing isn't just a career, it's a journey through many different eras.
Some of us are chasing adventure. Some are focused on family. Some are building our careers. Others are rediscovering freedom or seeking stability. And sometimes, we're a little bit of all of them at once.
So tell us—what era are you in?
Have we missed one?
We'd love to hear how your career has evolved and what matters most to you in this season of life.
